Boston Children's Hospital is one of the largest pediatric hospitals in the United States, and a major teaching facility of Harvard Medical School. Founded in 1869 as a 20-bed hospital for children, it is now a comprehensive medical center for pediatric and adolescent health care, dedicated to excellence in patient care, teaching and research. The  hospital has performed  many 'firsts' including the world's first successful surgical procedure to correct a congenital cardiovascular defect (1938). Boston Children's has 404 beds, is the #1 pediatric hospital in the country, and is home to the world's largest research enterprise based at a pediatric hospital. The country's first laboratory for developing safe, bacteria-free milk got its start in 1891 at a small, 60-bed hospital on Huntington.
