"Mrs. Jack" Gardner was a leading American art collector, philanthropist, patron, and a colorful figure in Boston society. She built this museum styled after the Renaissance palaces of Venice with an interior courtyard garden. The Gardner Museum’s remarkable collection includes masterworks by Rembrandt, Michelangelo, Raphael, Botticelli and Sargent, spanning 30 centuries. Changing contemporary and historic exhibitions, America’s oldest museum music program, and a seasonal courtyard garden display continue Isabella Gardner’s legacy and provide ongoing inspiration for visitors. The new wing, designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano, opened in January 2012.
