Founded in 1873, Massachusetts College of Art (MassArt) has a legacy of leadership as the only freestanding, public college of art and design in the country and the nation's first art school to grant a degree. MassArt was founded to produce drawing teachers for Commonwealth schools and to train professional artists, designers, and architects. The college is nationally known for offering broad access to a quality professional arts education, accompanied by a strong general education in the liberal arts. MassArt also offers public programs of innovative exhibitions, lectures and events.  MassArt moved to it current Huntington campus in 1983. The MassArt Design and Media Center opened in 2016 and is the newest addition to the country's only public college of art and design. The Bakalar & Paine Galleries in the South Building are the largest free contemporary art space in New England showcasing work by emerging and established artists and designers in all media.
